Ontario license plates made from 1905 to 1910 were the second issue after the leather plates. The rubber plates were made by Gutta Percha & Rubber Ltd. established in 1883. The factory and headquarters were located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Gutta-percha is a name for a type of tree that has a sap that latex rubber can be produced from. In addition to manufacturing and selling tires, the operation produced and distributed a full line of rubber goods across Canada – including license plates.

Beginning in 1910, a major change to the look of the plates was implemented. The province required Gutta Percha to place the name of the province within a white bar at the top of the plate. Unfortunately the text was not visible at any sort of distance. Fewer “white bar” plates have survived as they only produced them for one year. They are listed toward the bottom of the list under 1910 registrations.

At this time there are no dealer plate known that have survived from this era. The only evidence found to date is the picture below and reference to them in the 1906 “List of Permits to Operate Motor Vehicles in Ontario” manual which Ontario produced annually from about 1903-1912. It’s unknown at this time if distinctive “white bar” plates were made for this series.

1905-10 Rubber Dealer Plates – 0 Known

Motorcycle plates were first issued in April 30, 1907 according to Ministry records. Over a three year period approximately 500 were issued. They were made of a leather backing and rubber front. Both pieces were crimped together by a wire rim around the full edge. They were also made by Gutta Percha & Rubber Ltd.
